Understanding color theory may seem basic, but it is essential to use Demi Correctors the right way. Remember, the color wheel has primary colors, complementary colors, and analogous colors. The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. Complimentary colors are the shades opposite on the color wheel to the primary colors. So complementary colors are: red and green, yellow and purple, and orange and blue. Analogous colors are the different shades of a specific color on the color wheel. They’re typically right next to the main color.
A common way to determine which Demi Corrector to use is by learning what the excess colors are in your skin causing the distraction. For example, while looking at a blemish, the automatic color most associated with it, is red. However, this is rarely the case. More often than not, if you look closely at a blemish’s tones, it actually has deeper and darker shades of red to it. Those deep, dark shades of red contain an excess of blue and purple. So in order to correctly neutralize a blemish with excess blue and purple, with an orange or yellow.
Demi color correcting is a makeup technique that involves using colors that are opposite on the color wheel to cancel out or neutralize certain skin discolorations, so selecting the colour is based on the color of the distraction, not your skin tone. Choose a color corrector that is opposite on the color wheel to the discoloration you want to correct. For example, green is opposite to red, so a green color corrector is used to neutralize redness. For dark circles, a peach or orange color corrector is used to neutralize the blue or purple undertones. If you want to correct some bluish-purple under-eye circles, these would likely be in the B1 shade on the wheel. If we look at the opposite side of the wheel, we see YO1. This means YO1 would be our perfect shade for color correcting. This will infuse your skin with a natural luminosity.
Seint Demi Colour Correctors can be tricky to use at first, but once you are able to correctly identify the excess colours showing through your skin causing a distraction you want to cover, using Demi colour correctors becomes really simple. So first identify the excess colour, then select the corresponding Demi colour that will neutralize it.
Excess Blue in skin tones will appear as a dark area. Often, it will appear ashy or muddy, even look dark purple. To correct excess blue, use a Demi colour with Orange(O) in it including: O1 and O3 are the most common used. However, there are other Demi shades with orange in them including: O5, O7, YO1, OY1, RO1 and OR1.
Excess Green will look brown on the skin and usually looks muddy and can even appear dark orange. Most often, excess green can be found in melasma, age spots, sun spots, and freckles. To cover green distractions, using Demi colours with Red(R) may work best including: R1, RO1, and OR1.
Excess Violet in the skin is typically referred to as “redness”. Excess Violet is both dark (like blue) and saturated (like red) because blue and red make violet. It typically appears in blemishes, rosacea, and broken capillaries. When you are colour correcting violet you will want to use a Demi colour with Yellow(Y) in it including: Y1, OY1, and YO1.
Excess True Red rarely appears on the skin, but when it does it appears hot, inflamed, even angry. It is seen most often in new blemishes, acne, and rashes. To correct red, the best colour to use is Green(G) including: G1, Y1nd O1 can also be combined because purple and blue often accompany red.
Excess Orange is a rare distraction colour to find but can be seen at the center of an untouched blemish or on fair skin tones. The Blue(B) B1 Demi colour works best to cover these orange distractions.
Excess Yellow is another distracting colour that can be found most often in bruising, melasma, and inner eye corner. For these types of distractions you can Demi colour correct with yellow using Violet(V) V1.
